A Study of Effects of Scholarship Trends on OBC/SC/ST Students

ABSTRACT:
This trend has its historic importance. For centuries, Indian society has witnessed a rigid caste system. The caste has been the determinant of class positions resulting in acute inequality in the distribution of wealth and income. Several studies have revealed that the role of education is key factor as far as the development of the schedule caste is concerned. Against the background, the present study intends to examine the current educational status of SC children along with the infrastructural and other facilities available to them.

INTRODUCTION:
A scholarship is an award of financial aid for a student to further his or her education. Scholarships are awarded based upon various criteria, which usually reflect the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the award. Scholarship money is award money and hence not to be paid back.
The objective of the scholarship scheme is to provide financial assistance to the OBC/SC/ST students studying at school or College level to enable them to complete their education. This scholarship is sponsored by M.P. State Govt. and Central Govt. both and given for the study of all recognized courses pursued in recognized institutions. State Govt. pay course fees, monthly maintenance, exam fee, hostel fee, library fee, study tour fee etc. Scholarship is applicable for regular students, being present more than 75% in institute. Student may take admission in any quality institute and whatever is a fee of that course in that institute, paid by state govt. With the help of this scheme, reserve category students are able to study high profile courses as engineering, medical, paramedical courses in quality institutes. Huge number of students are getting advantage of this scheme and making their career. It’s a supportive trend for quality education.
METHODOLOGY:
For scholarship trend study, questionnaire method was used. Data was collected from schools and colleges. Collected student data is classified according to study class as up to 11th class, 12th class, Higher education course classes, technical classes, medical course classes, management education classes and designing education classes. No. of beneficiaries was counted and converted into % according to total student of that category students included in study.

Scholarship beneficiaries in past years related data shows that scholarship trend is increasing year by year. Students are becoming more concern to get scholarship. For academic session 2009-10, 73% school students of OBC category got scholarship and at college level 67% students of OBC students got financial assistance. This trend increased up to academic session 2013-14, OBC beneficiaries varied 81 % and 79% of OBC students at School and College level respectively.
Year wise SC scholarship data is showing that year by year trend of beneficiaries is increasing. Students are getting education with the help of scholarship amount. For academic session 2009-10, 86% school students of SC category and at college level 83% of SC students got scholarship. In academic session 2013-14, SC beneficiaries increased and 94 % at School level and 95% of SC students at College level got benefit of scholarship.
Data regarding ST scholarship year wise is depicting that ST scholarship trend is increasing. Year wise comparison of beneficiary students shows that more and more students are taking advantage of scholarship. For academic session 2009-10, 88% school students of ST category got scholarship and at college level 87% students of ST students got financial assistance. This trend increased up to academic session 2013-14, ST beneficiaries varied 96 % and 95% of OBC students at School and College level respectively.
Study of beneficiaries at various level shows that 78% of OBC boy and 84% of OBC girl students studying up to 11th class getting advantage of scholarship. Students studying in 12th class, 76% of OBC boy and 83% of OBC girl are beneficiaries of scholarship. In higher education courses, 74% of OBC boys and 80% of OBC girl are taking benefit of scholarship. For technical courses, 81% of OBC boy and 83% of OBC girl are taking advantage of scholarship. 83% of boy and 86 % of girl are getting scholarship for medical courses. Similarly 82% of OBC boy and 84% of OBC girls are beneficiaries of management course. Scholarship % for designing courses i.e., 73% girls and 76% boys are getting benefit of scholarship.
SC scholarship beneficiaries at different level related data shows that 93% of SC boy and 94% of SC girl students studying up to 11th class getting advantage of scholarship. Students studying in 12th class, 92% of SC boy and 94% of SC girl are beneficiaries of scholarship. In higher education courses, 90% of SC boys and 93% of SC girl are taking benefit of scholarship. For technical courses and medical courses, percentage of beneficiaries is high. 96% of SC boy and 97% of SC girl for technical course 97% of boy and 96 % of girl for medical courses are getting scholarship. Similarly 92% boy and 94% of SC girls are beneficiaries of management course. 92% girls and 93% boys are taking benefit of scholarship studying engaged in designing education.
ST scholarship data at various level shows that 97% of ST boy and 98% of ST girl students studying up to 11th class getting advantage of scholarship. Among ST students of 12th class, 96% boy and 94% of ST girl are beneficiaries of scholarship. In higher education courses, 94% of ST boys and 93% of ST girl are taking benefit of scholarship. 97% of ST boy and 98% of ST girl for technical course, 96% boy and 98 % girl for medical courses are getting scholarship. Similarly 94% boy and 95% of ST girls are beneficiaries of scholarship for management course. 92% girls and 95% boys are taking benefit of scholarship getting designing education.
CONCLUSION:
Scholarship trend increased student’s participation in higher study. Data shows that students % is increasing per year getting advantage of scholarship. Availability of fund to economically backward students inspires them towards quality education. Thus it is an important quality supportive factor. Education expansion, girl’s involvement, funding schemes for weak categories are supportive for quality education system. With the help of scholarship amount students are doing high profile career courses.
