ABSTRACT:
Considering that a lot of research has been done on the effect of television on children, these researchers have mostly dwelt on the negative effect of television viewing and have drawn the inference that television is a negative contributor to the socialization of children. This study is basically interested in highlighting the ways in which television viewing can aid and enhance the process of socialization of children in our society. This of course does not totally over rule the fact that the medium does not in some ways or cases actually contribute to socialization.
KEYWORDS: Television, Children, Society, Family.
INTRODUCTION:
Communication is the basic social process of human society. When we think about someone we love, or an argument, or listen to a lecture, or call the time temperature or write letters, or go to a movie. We are involved in the process of communication. Communication is the human cement that holds a society together. It links each of us to other individuals, groups and institutions and is the basic tool of a culture. Without communication there would be no society.
Communication is perhaps one of the most loosely defined terms in the contemporary media and cultural studies. Perhaps it is because the term encompasses a multitude of experience, action and events, as well as the whole variety of happenings and meanings and technologies. Thus a conference or a meeting or even a mela or procession is a communication event, Newspaper, radio, video and television are communication media, and phones, computers, satellites and internet are communication technologies.
Communication and information are not similar concepts or experiences. Communication is not the mere sending or receiving of information in whatever form.
Rather it is a whole situation and an experience a human relationship, in sum Information on the other hand is made up of bits of messages verbal and non-verbal and is essentially un linear.
Children Programmes:
There are defined as programmes specially made for and offered to children at certain special times. Cartoon, Puppet shows, live stories and plays and educational items are some of the items that make up children’s shows. Feature films in Hindi for children are also screened occasionally. Television channels are exclusively targeted at children and young people are POGO, Hungamma, Disney, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network.
In the early days of Indian Television, Doordarshan channel programmes of Dance and Music brought India’s foremost performers of the TV screen. The standard format of these programmes was an elaborate introduction in Hindi and English of the performer and his or her style, followed by a live recital of various items.
The arrival of multi channel cable and satellite TV put paid to Doordarshan’s monopoly, though some of the formats introduced by it were gladly adopted by the new channels. One of these was chaaya Geet or Chitra Geet the film-based music programme which continues to be popular. Similar programmes in Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, and Tamil also became famous. However, the majority of such film based programmes have been replaced by what in the industry called Talent Hunt shows which are played out in lavish stage sets and judged by well known stars from the world of film music, fashion, arts and dance choreography. Talent hunt shows involve different types of quiz programmes and a whole range of song dance and acting competition.
Positive Impact of Television on Children:
Many parents may disagree; there are several positive effects of television on children. Most of us with young children grew up watching television. Television programming needs to be carefully selected as well. This means the content of the show as well as the way the show is presented. For children under the age of six years, choose commercial-free programming. Commercials break up shows into short segments, which teach children to have a limited attention span. Public television is usually commercial free, and has some worthwhile children’s programming. Additionally, there are many DVDs for children which have content that reinforces literacy skills and other life skills for children. Content is Important Some shows for toddlers and young children are cartoons or have no educational value beyond entertainment. Since young children have developing minds, if they will watch television, select content-rich programming. Shows or programs that teach about letters, shapes, imaginative play and use catchy music to teach subjects like manners, sharing, dealing with feelings, and other quality subjects, are ideal choices.
How Children Develop Televisual Literacy:
Children begin to engage in abstract thought which allows them to understand the medium’s code and convention’s sufficiently to follow story lines. They develop level of perception which allow them to understand the chunk and segments that constitute a television programme and how they are linked. From the age of 12 children are assumed to understand television in a similar way to adults. Children develop different types of media literacy as they grow up. Today children start experiencing television almost from birth even if it is just on in the background. As children mature, television viewing increases to increased comphrensibility. As they mature they learn to draw distinction between their own world, what is shown on television and whether it is true to life. While younger children acquire basic skills, older children can become critical viewers, using television to construct identities for themselves and distinguishing from themselves from other children. Children gradually develop different types of skills through watching television. Over time they learn how to understand television, but may not perceive it as adults do. Understanding what children can and cannot do television and how they perceive it is therefore essential for examining how it impacts their lives. In certain circumstances children can learn words and their meaning from educational programmes especially designed for them. Children between the ages of two and five may experience benefits from good quality educational television. For this group of children there is evidence that attention and comphrension, receptive, vocabulary, some expressive languages, letter sound knowledge and knowledge of narrative and storytelling all benefit from high quality and age appropriate educational programming. Although very young children can and do learn from educational television, some programmes are more effective than others. Factors which raise this effectiveness include the use of appealing element such as humor. Examine the impact of television in isolation may not be sufficient in future and changes in the way that media are consumed across multiple platforms need to be considered and examined as well.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:
· To study how parents perceive their children viewing television
· To examine the creative development of children through television
· To know learning skills, behavioural changes among children through television.
· To evaluate the importance of television in the socialization of children
Sampling:
Sampling may be defined as the selection of some part of an aggregate or totality on the basis of which a judgment or inference about the aggregate or totality is made. In other words, it is the process of obtaining information about an entire population by examining only a part of it. In most of the research work and surveys, the usual approach happens to be to make generalizations or to draw inferences based on the parameters of population from which the samples are taken. Sample should be truly representative of population characteristics without any bias so that it may result in valid and reliable conclusion.
Belthangady Taluk was selected for the study and for the sake of convenience. As my topic was “Television as a positive contributor in the socialization of children” the respondents were chosen from all Parents, Youths around the Belthangady taluk. The Sample Consisted of 120 Respondents, out of which 48 were Males and 64 were Females.
